" John F. Kennedy, A Symbolic Journey", By Contributing Atronomy Editor Dan Matlaga

The Earth rotates on its axis.  Using your eyeballs from your backyard the rotation of the earth manifests itself by giving the impression stars rise in the east and set in the west. This motion is called daily motion.

Superimposed on this general east to west motion of the sky is a smaller west to east motion of seven celestial objects.  The seven are the Sun, Moon, Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn. Their incremental west east motion is due to the fact the Moon revolves around the earth in the same direction the earth rotates, which is the same direction the planets orbit the sun. For an observer far to the north of the solar system looking back, this motion is anti-clockwise. This motion is called annual motion and has the effect of moving one of the seven objects west to east in front of the background stars. For brevity we will ignore retrograde motion.

The view of the solar system with the sun at the center and the planets orbit the sun is known as the Heliocentric view of the solar system.  It is the one taught in schools and is the modern view.  The Heliocentric view of the solar system is a relatively modern view.  It's acceptance is but a few hundred years old.

The Geocentric view, which has the sun, moon, stars and planets orbit around a flat stationary earth, held sway for thousands of years. Origins of some elements of this Geocentric view are, as historians were once found of saying, "...lost to antiquity."

The educated classic Greek of 2,500 years ago believed in the Geocentric view of the heavens. To a Greek, the Earth was a large flat stationary object.
Surrounding the stationary earth was a huge, perfectly transparent crystalline sphere. The Moon was attached to the inner surface of the sphere.  Of the seven objects the moon 's west to east motion was the swift.  The moon moves west to east half a degree in an hour. This is the apparent diameter of the full moon in the sky.

Surrounding the Moon sphere  is an even larger sphere for the planet Mercury.  It too is transparent and has the planet Mercury fixed to its inner surface.
The sphere for the planet Venus is greater in size and surrounds  the sphere of Mercury.

The Sun takes one year to move around in front of the more distant stars. The sphere of the sun surrounds the smaller sphere of Venus.

Mars takes two years to complete a journey in front of the more distant stars, so the transparent sphere holding Mars must be larger than that of the sun.
If you go outside any given night and mark the position of Jupiter on a star map, you will have to wait 12 years for Jupiter to make the round in front of the stars and come back to your initial starting point.  Since Jupiter traveled slower than Mars, it was reasoned Jupiter must be further away.  The sphere holding Jupiter must be larger than the sphere for  Jupiter.

Finally we reach the sphere of Saturn.  It was the slowest moving of the seven and therefore must be furthest away.  It takes Saturn nearly thirty years to complete one circuit in front of the stars.

The mechanism to keep the sphere of the fixed stars, sun, moon and planets in their respective motion was located just beyond the horizon.  It was maintained by the Greek Fates.

If you were a spirit in Heaven but want to get to the earth, you had to fall through the seven transparent spheres. Each time you pass one of the spheres you become more physical.  It is when you pass through the sphere of the moon, the nearest sphere to the earth that you become a fully physical human being. When you die the opposite occurs, you have to go back up through the seven spheres. Each time a sphere is breached you become more spirit, less physical until you breach the seventh sphere, the one holding Saturn, that you are a full spirit once again.  You have achieved seventh heaven.

This Thursday we will observe the 50th year of the assassination of John F. Kennedy.  Watch the funeral procession through the streets of Washington D.C.

The caisson carrying the presidents body is accompanied by seven horses whose hoofs have been blackened.  Six horses in front of and pulling the caisson and one horse following behind the caisson.  These seven horses symbolically carry the president up through the seven spheres.  Each time a sphere is breached one of the horses returns to the earth.  It isn't until the last sphere, the seventh holding the planet Saturn, is breached that the last horse returns.  That is the horse following the caisson.

It is the only horse with a saddle but no visible rider.  The physical and spirit are now separate.  This indicates a successful journey.  The president is now a full spirit in heaven.

How many standing along that funeral route realize that not only were they witness to a ritual involving a dead king thousands of years old, but right before their eyes were the symbolic procession of the Sun, Moon, and five visible Planets?

Welcome Guest Author T.M. Williams and her latest Novel, sci-fi gem Sun Gate!

Welcome T.M.!  Can't wait to hear more about you, Sun Gate and your other works and genres as well.

First off, please tell us a little about yourself.

Well here’s my “official” Bio:
T.M. Williams began her writing career by accident when a song inspired a story about a woman named Carter.  What started off as a blip of an idea turned into the Bohemian Grove trilogy, a story based on ancient aliens, science, conspiracy, religion, and love.

Soon after, the completed manuscript was picked up by Nightengale Press Publishing. Bohemian Grove was released in early 2013 - just a little over a year after she began writing.

I’m also a freelance journalist and copywriter.  I’m the proud blogger of thebloggoddess.com and the emancipatedblogger.com

What genres do you write?

Horror, Mystery, True-Crime, Science Fiction and Adult Romance.

Tell us about your newest release and what inspired you to write it:

Sun Gate is the 2nd book in the Bohemian Grove trilogy. The first book, Bohemian Grove, is what inspired my writing career.  I haven’t been able to stop writing since!

What other books have you written?

Undead Winter (Amazon Best-Seller), Moonlight Mini-Series, A Melanie King Affair (Amazon Best-Seller), and am currently writing Clusters: Case of the Missing, A true-crime paranormal mystery.

That's extremely impressive!  If you could spend a day with one of your characters, which one would it be and why?

Great question! I’d have to say either William from the Bohemian Grove trilogy, because he’s so electric or Danny Ruiz from Undead Winter because he’s such a psychopath.

Do you have to do a lot of research for your stories?

Almost all my books involve a lot of research.  Even for the Moonlight series I did a lot of research on locations.  As for Sun Gate, I really go into parallel universe theories, Sumerian mythology, the Fermilab studies in Chicago, and explore places like the Egyptian Pyramids and Machu Picchu.

So yes, tons and tons of research.  I have stacks of books I've gone through, a lot of Googling, and a lot of documentaries.  I want my readers to really walk away with something to think about.  I tend to attract intellectual readers that keep me on my toes!

Which of your works would you most like to see as a movie?

Definitely the Bohemian Grove trilogy.  It’s just a fun and beautiful story that goes to amazing places.  I’ve spent a long time developing the characters on there and they’re so unique that I’d love to see them in action. Plus, I’d just love to see even more people exposed to the ancient alien theory (what it’s based on).

I think I’d be too scared to see Undead Winter on film.

Who would you cast as the lead?

I’m one of the few authors who really thinks about this. But for Jack I’d cast Jake Gyllenhaal and Jibril would be Woody Harrelson. As for the other characters, I don’t know. Maybe my readers have an idea.

Yes, readers, please tell us your suggestions!  Where do you get your inspiration for your main characters?

My writing muse is responsible for that.

Hmmm...sounds intriguing!  Tell us about your experience with the road to publication?

I’ve had a unique experience.  I never thought I’d write a book and never planned on it.  But one night I was listening to Colorblind from Counting Crows and just pictured this woman sitting at a dining room table.  The picture is so clear I can still see it in my head as if it really existed.  So, I wrote it down.

That image turned into a full length novel, (Bohemian Grove) and I haven’t been able to stop writing.  I never planned on publishing the book but fortunately I have a best friend who believed in me more than I believed in myself.  A publisher heard about my book through a friend and asked to take a look at it.  Long story short, she published the book and I’ve never looked back.
The experience has been mind blowing.  I’m constantly having to pinch myself.  It wasn’t until Sun Gate came out that I think it finally hit me.  I’ve only been writing for 2 years.

That's amazing!  So you never had to "chase after" a publisher - awesome - it was just meant to be.
How do you balance your “real life” with writing?

By not trying to balance it.  I think there’s too much pressure on people to balance our lives and there’s just no such thing.  I write when I can.  Sometimes that means I get very little sleep, sometimes that means I go days without writing, sometimes I’ll write for 10-12 hours straight. It’s whenever I can and the mood strikes – fortunately, that’s often.

That makes a lot of sense.  I agree, we all put way too much pressure on ourselves.
If you could go back in time, what historical period or event would you most love to visit?

Who wouldn't want to experience the Tudor’s first hand?!  I’d only want to go back and be a fly on the wall.  It was a difficult time to live in and I wouldn't want to experience that first hand.

But, of course – I’d love to go back to the time of the Sumerians or Egyptians because there’s so much mystery around both era’s that we just don’t know or understand.

What author would you love to trade places with for a day?

Hmm, tough one!  Fictional author would be Richard Castle.  I’m sort of obsessed with him and would love to fight crime, solve murders, and be a best-selling author – plus play poker with some pretty amazing authors/writers as well.

Real author, I’d have to say Dean Koontz.  He started my obsession with reading and I’ve read almost every single one of his books, ever since I was a teenager.  I’ve followed his career for two decades and I love that he’s a best-seller but not someone that will get hounded on the street by crazed fans. Plus, I love his writing and would love to pick his brain.

I absolutely LOVE your book's trailer...and I'm not easy to impress with book trailers.  I really don't like most of them, but yours is absolutely awesome!  Take a look everyone:

Love it!

Thank you so much for being with us today, T.M. and sharing all the news of Sun Gate as well as your other creative endeavors with our readers!  Please let us know how we may stay in touch with you and also, please come back soon!

Please Enjoy an Excerpt From Author John Holt's Latest Novel, Historical Murder Mystery "The Thackery Journal".

27th April 1865 What place is this in which I find myself? What manner of circumstance surrounds me? A wanted fugitive, hunted as though an animal, for that, maybe, is what I have become. No more than a hunted man, a man without hope. They will be here soon, my pursers. What have I done, and what have I become? I have helped to cause murder. I have brought shame on my father, and my beloved mother. I have brought shame upon the South. It would have been best had I never been born. Will I ever find peace? Not here and now, but with Gods forgiveness maybe there will be a kind of solace.

His arm was beginning to pain once more. An hour or so ago he had hurt it once more, on the doorframe. He had stumbled and fell against the side of the door, and the wound had started to bleed once again. The sleeve of his tunic was drenched in scarlet. Red droplets were steadily falling on to the table, and staining the papers that he was writing on. The bullet was still deep inside. He could feel it. He could actually move it from side to side. He had lost a lot of blood, and felt quite weak. Infection had begun to set in.
He knew that there was a danger of gangrene setting in. If that happened then he would almost certainly lose the arm. He needed help badly, but there was none to be had. There was nowhere to go, no one to turn to. The young boy had tried to put a dressing on shortly after he had arrived at the house, but he did not know how to stop the bleeding, or how to treat the infection. He had wrapped gauze around the wound, tying it tightly to stem the blood flow. For a while it seemed to be effective, but since hitting the doorframe the bleeding had started once again.
It didnt matter, not now, Thackery murmured. It was all too late, far too late.  It would all be over quite soon now anyway.

Quite soon, and they will be here. He looked down at the table and sighed deeply.
He looked up suddenly, startled by the sound of the approaching riders. He listened for a few moments. He did not need to see them, but he knew instinctively who they were. He also knew why they were there. It was hard now to remember how this had all come about. How had he got involved? He shook his head.  Insanity, he muttered. Killing Lincoln was nothing more than utter madness, futile.
Did I really think that it was the right thing to do? That it was just? Jacob murmured. That, in some way, it would make a difference? Did I actually think that we could get away with it and that the authorities would just stand by and do nothing? He shook his head, and hit the table hard with his fist. What a fool I was.
Why he couldnt even remember the name of the man who had actually pulled the trigger. He could not remember whether he had actually met him. He shook his head once again. Of course he had met him. What was he thinking? Had he not been his shadow, his protector? Wasnt he to be his replacement if anything had gone wrong?
If anything had gone wrong, he murmured, and started to laugh. Everything had gone wrong. He shook his head once again. And it had happened so quickly. Why it was only twelve days ago. No. He shook his head, and thought for a few moments, counting on his fingers. It was thirteen days. Just thirteen short days ago. It seemed like years ago, another lifetime, and another place. It was somehow unreal. He could not think straight. His memory was beginning to play tricks on him.
But what was his name? Jacob whispered. He shook his head once again. He could see him in the room with Jarvis and the others, at that first meeting. He could see him going into the theatre. He could see him coming out from the stage door of the theatre. He could see the soldiers dragging him from the barn. He shook his head and closed his eyes. He could see him lying on the ground, dead. But what was his name? He could not remember. It did not matter, not now. Nothing really mattered any more.
He shook his head. Not so, he murmured. I will never see my mother, or father, again. That matters. He started to shake. That matters a great deal.
The sound of the approaching horsemen became louder. He could hear the harnesses jangling. He could hear the horses breathing, and snorting. He could hear the pounding of the horses hooves. He listened for a few moments more. He could hear a loud thumping sound, the sound of his own heart beating faster and faster. He took two or three deep breaths and looked down at the table.
They are here. They have come for me. It will soon be over.
They are here. They have come for me. It will soon be over.

John Holt Biography
I was born in 1943 in Bishops Stortford, Hertfordshire. I currently live in Essex with my wife, Margaret, and my daughter Elizabeth. And not forgetting Missy, the cat who adopted us, and considered that we were worthy enough to live with her. For many years I was a Chartered Surveyor in local government. I was a Senior Project Manager with the Greater London Council from 1971 until it was closed down in 1986. I then set up my own surveying practice, retiring in 2008.
I suppose like many others I had always thought how good it would be to write a novel, but I could never think of a good enough plot. My first novel, “The Kammersee Affair”, published in 2006, was inspired by a holiday in the Austrian lake district. We were staying in Grundlsee. The next lake, Toplitzsee, was used by the German Navy during the war to test rockets, and torpedoes. As the war came to an end many items were hidden in the lake – millions of UK pounds, and US dollars, in counterfeit currency; jewellery stolen from the holocaust victims; and weapons. There were also rumours of gold bullion being hidden in that lake. Despite extensive searches the gold was never found. In my book, however, it is found, only in the next lake, Kammersee.
The books that followed, The Mackenzie File, The Marinski Affair, and Epidemic, all feature Tom Kendall, a down to earth private detective, and were originally published by Raider Publishing in New York. My fifth book, A Killing In The City, another featuring Tom Kendall, was originally published by Night Publishing. In August 2012 I decided to go down the self published route, and formed my own publishing brand PHOENIX. All five novels have now been published on PHOENIX. A sixth novel “The Thackery Journal” was published on 8 August 2013.
I am currently working on two other novels featuring Tom Kendall, and I have made a tentative start on an Adventure novel.

More books by John Holt:

The Marinski Affair began as a dull mundane case involving a missing husband. Okay, so he was a rich missing husband, but he was nonetheless, still only a missing husband. The case soon developed into one involving robbery, kidnapping, blackmail and murder. But was there really a kidnapping? And exactly who is blackmailing who? Who actually carried out the robbery? Who committed the murders? Who can you trust? Who can you believe? Is anyone actually telling the truth? What have they got to hide? And what connection was there with a jewel theft that occurred four years previously? All is not as it seems. Tom Kendall, private detective, had the task of solving the mystery. He was usually pretty good at solving puzzles, but this one was different, somehow. It wasn’t that he didn’t have any of the pieces. Oh no, he wasn’t short of clues. It was just that none of the pieces seemed to fit together.

‘To make a killing in the City’ is a phrase often used within the financial world, to indicate making a large profit on investments, or through dealings on the stock market - the bigger the profit, the bigger the killing. However, Tom Kendall, a private detective, on holiday in London, has a different kind of killing in mind when he hears about the death of one of his fellow passengers who travelled with him on the plane from Miami. It was suicide apparently, a simple overdose of prescribed tablets. Kendall immediately offers his help to Scotland Yard. He is shocked when he is told his services will not be required. They can manage perfectly well without him, thank you.

The lake was flat and calm, with barely a ripple. Its dark waters glistening, reflecting the moonlight, as though it were a mirror. Fritz Marschall knew that neither he, nor his friend, should really have been there. They, like many others before them, had been attracted to the lake by the many rumors that had been circulating. He thought of the endless stories there had been, of treasures sunken in, or buried around the lake. He recalled the stories of the lake being used to develop torpedoes and rockets during the war. Looking out across the dark water, he wondered what secrets were hidden beneath the surface.

Tom Kendall, a down to earth private detective, is asked to investigate the death of a young newspaper reporter. The evidence shows quite clearly that it was an accident: a simple, dreadful accident. That is the finding of the coroner and the local police. Furthermore, there were two witnesses. They saw the whole thing. But was it an accident, or was it something more sinister? Against a backdrop of a viral epidemic slowly spreading from Central America, a simple case soon places Kendall up against one of the largest drug companies in the country.

It was time to mark his mate.

Mission: Survive an Alpha

Excerpt

Ellie’s smile dimmed. “Aric said, in time, you’d find your mate and for everyone to leave you alone to decide your life yourself.”
Her hope deflated. It was what she’d always told everyone. Somehow, hearing that he’d said the same made her want to run to the liquor store and buy a barrel of wine.
A sharp pain pierced her heart, deeper and deeper until she wanted to cry. Though Jordan would rather dance around naked in public than admit her feelings for Aric, she had secretly continued to hope. Now, that hope was dead.
“That’s true. I can decide my life myself.”
She remembered thinking the same thing the night of her senior prom, until Aric had seen her. Memories flooded her mind. She’d walked down the hall in her sapphire blue dress to find him in the living room with Ellie. He’d given her a look she’d never forget. It was the kind of look she’d always wanted to see from him. And he’d lifted a hand to her face, caressed her cheek, and told her she looked beautiful. She’d almost melted into a blue spot on the floor. Her previous concern at going to the prom dateless with only Ellie as her companion had flown out the window. He’d been the only thing on her mind the rest of that night.
She cleared her throat, unwilling to think about Aric any longer. “So, back to this scenting ceremony, what exactly happens?”
“Well…” Ellie’s pale features turned a dark crimson with embarrassment.
Jordan started to worry about what went on. Would it be some rated R stuff? “Well what?”
“First, they start out as wolves and sniff each other.” She glanced at Jordan and bit her lip. “To see if the animals feel any kind of attraction.”
That made sense. Considering they were going to be mated forever, they needed to know if they were both compatible as humans and wolves, so nothing strange there. She stared at Ellie expectantly.
“They shift into their human bodies and scent each other that way too.”
If Ellie’s face turned any redder, Jordan would need to throw some water on her to bring her temperature down. “Wait, they’re naked after their shift, aren’t they?”
Ellie nodded, glanced down at her glass of wine, and took a gulp. Oh. Yeah that would be little more than Jordan had expected, but nothing she couldn’t handle.
“It’s okay, Ellie, I’m sure it’s not as bad as you’re thinking.”
Ellie cleared her throat and downed the rest of wine.
“Why haven’t your parents pushed you into mating? I mean Kelly is like five years younger than you, so that makes her around twenty-five, right? But you are still unmated. And your parents don’t seem like they’ve lost their values. I mean your whole shifter history is based on pushing the males and females to mate as soon as they reach the right age. Go forth and make some fur balls and all that. Isn’t that what you’ve said before?”
Ellie shrugged. “Mom and dad are the pack leaders and don’t feel I need to be pushed into mating until I’m comfortable. Mom kind of had a hand at getting Kelly and Marco together, so that kept her occupied for a bit. Besides, the males are the ones that need to mate first. They continue our line and need mates as soon as possible.”
Aric would need a mate. Bone-crushing sadness enveloped her. She wanted to go hit something. Maybe shoot something. Dryness took over her throat. “So they’re going to get mates during this ceremony as well?”
Ellie nodded, her lips pursing. “If my mom has her way, yes. She’s invited a bevy of females for Aric, Mason, Nathan, and Jake to choose from.”
Her stomach knotted at the thought of Aric choosing another woman while she watched. Distress twisted massive knots in her stomach. It was definitely best for her to watch from a distance. If she caught some woman sniffing Aric, she might forget her composure and let her well-known temper loose.
“Are you sure you still want to do this?” Ellie’s gaze held a note of sympathy.
She nodded, folded her arms over her chest, and bit her lip. “If I want to write an accurate account about your kind in the book, then yes, I do.”
Where the hell were Karla, Emma and Nicole? This was ladies night. Okay, more like “let’s get drunk, man bash, and eat a lot night” but still. Her friends had never been late for wine and food.
She was about to open her mouth when the doorbell rang. The three consecutive rings indicated at least Emma and Karla had arrived. Emma always rang the bell three times in a row. It was like a nervous tick or something.
Jordan stood to open the door and her legs tried to fold under her. Shit, how many glasses had she had? She slowly made her way to the front door to let her friends inside.
Another round of rings met her at the door.

The Summer Triangle - by Contributing Astronomy Editor, Dan Matlaga

"The Summer Triangle" -
Why is that our topic on this fall day?

It is a legitimate question…

We had all summer to discuss the summer triangle but no, it is fall when the topic of the summer triangle is addressed.

The summer triangle involves three bright stars in three official constellations. The constellations are Cygnus the swan, Aquila the Eagle and Lyra the harp. There is a bright star associated with each constellation.  Deneb is the name of the brightest star in Cygnus, the star Altair brightest star in Aquila and Vega the brightest star in Lyra. When a line is drawn to connect the three bright stars we have drawn a clear and unmistakable almost isosceles triangle, which is a triangle whose two sides are longer than the third side.

The Summer Triangle

The summer triangle is visible all night during the summer which gives the group its name.  Although it is no longer summer, the triangle is directly overhead at 8:00 these evenings which makes it an easy target for beginning stargazers. The triangle sets about 2 am.

To locate the summer triangle simply lie down outside on a flat surface with your feet to the south at 8:00 pm.  South is where the sun is at noon.  Your head will be to the north.  Look straight overhead; the three bright stars are unmistakable.  The base of the isosceles triangle and therefore the shortest of the three sides are to the north.  Stretch out your arm with hand against the sky and try, with your fingers, to span the distance between the two northern stars of the triangle. For most it cannot be done.  Your fingers won’t stretch out quite far enough.

The bright star to your left is Deneb.  It often marks the tail of the swan.  To the right is Vega usually drawn as part of the handle of the harp.  To the south is the bright star Altair, often depicted at the eagle’s neck.
The modern student can simply Google the three constellations, find their mythologies and there you have it. Zeus turned himself into a swan to seduce Leda.  The eagle is the bird that ate the liver of the rock chained Prometheus during the day.  At night the liver grew back so Aquila will feast the next day. This was the punishment of Prometheus for giving man the gift of fire. The harp is the instrument Orpheus played etc., etc., etc.

The above is the standard mainstream approach to stargazing.  To some of us it is highly unsatisfactory. The word “tri-angle” begs for three of the same.  It is called symmetry. There is an obvious celestial triangle but it is associated with a musical instrument and two birds.  The two birds, an eagle and swan are not known as songbirds so we cannot follow that route.  We can say these three constellations associated with a triangle are opaque. We cannot see past them.  To transform the constellations from opaque to transparent we must look elsewhere.

A good place to start is to realize the official 88 constellations we now recognize was the result of a 1930’s commission appointed by the International Astronomical Union. The commission’s task was to standardize the sky so an astronomer in Australia can identify a point in the heavens that would be understood by an astronomer in Garwood, New Jersey.  In addition every point in the sky will have to be part of a constellation.  As a result of this commission’s work we now see a Swan, Harp and Eagle among the stars of our summer triangle.

It was not always so. Here are three constellations of our summer triangle drawn by Johann Bayer in 1603.  His maps were at the beginning of centuries old mapmaking illustrating the constellations in elaborate artistic detail.  Note Bayer’s depiction of Lyra the harp.  Behind the harp we can see Bayer chooses to draw a vulture as well.  If we ignore the harp and use the vulture for these stars we can breathe a sigh of some relief.  We now have three birds for the summer triangle, a vulture, eagle and swan. But why these three birds and why are they associated with a triangle? It will not do to brush them off as simply images that do not have to make sense.  They are after all; mythical expressions and we all know myths are stories that are not true.

The Hut of Baba Yaga

Here is a drawing of one of my favorite mythical figures.  Her name is Baba Yaga from Russian-eastern European folklore.   She and her two sisters each lives in a house deep in the forest.  The house is standing on chicken legs. She has two sisters who are also named Baba Yaga.  One sister is young, the other is an adult. The modern interpretations of Baba Yaga are centered on the third sister, the old crone depicted here.
Baba Yaga eats children.

A boy kid or a girl kid wanders through the forest and comes across the hut of Baba Yaga.  The kid yells out the witches’ name three times: “Baba Yaga, Baba Yaga, Baba Yaga!” The house turns toward the kid, the door opens and out steps the ugly witch.  She takes the kid by the hand, both go into her hut, and the child is never seen again. Note the forks decorating the peak of her house.
The story of Baba Yaga is not the first time we hear of an ugly which who eats children.  There is a more common story of Hansel and Gretel.

“We have no more food to give our two children, they must leave the house,” said the stepmother to the father.

“Oh no,” the father exclaimed. “The forest is very dangerous. They could be walking through the forest and attacked by a bear! The bear could tear them to pieces! They will call out to us for help, but we cannot hear their cries for help! We cannot help them!”

“That’s right, but we have no more food to give them so they must leave the house.”

“Don’t you realize what can happen if they leave the house?  They could be walking down the forest path and trip over a log.  They could be on the ground with broken legs in excruciating pain, calling out to us for help, but we cannot help!”

“That’s right,” the stepmother replied, “But we have no more food to give them so they must leave the house.”

We know the rest of the story.  The wandering children wind up in the witch’s house.  The witch is fattening up Hansel to get him up to grade then push him into the oven.

Something is missing from these stories.  If the child knows he or she will be eaten by Baba Yaga, then why do they call out the witch’s name? It is the child who initiates the encounter.

Do you want to know what happens when a child enters Baba Yaga’s hut? If the child is a boy, he is given instructions which last the traditional two nights and three days.  The instructions include the realization that before entering the hut, the child depended on society for food, clothing, and shelter.  After leaving the hut society will depend on him to provide food, clothing, and shelter.  A boy does not leave the hut, a man does.  The child no longer exists.

If a girl enters the hut of Baba Yaga she is given the same instruction with the added features of what it means to bring forth another human being in that culture.  In addition, she is told although the husband is in charge of the household; the mother is its soul.  A girl does not leave the hut of the witch, a woman leaves the hut. The child no longer exists.

When we realize the folklore the oven plays in some regions of Europe, we can have a different understanding of Hansel and Gretel.  The oven transforms food from inedible to edible. The place of the oven holds the same sacred place as the altar of a church. It is a sacred transforming place inside the home.  When the stepmother says: “We have no more food to give them…,” what she is saying is “We have taught our children all we can teach them, they must leave the house and seek their own way in life.”
The husband objects on the grounds that life is cruel in the forest.  He is saying in effect, he cannot let go, he wants his children to remain children and not face the world.  In this interpretation it is the husband who plays the heavy and not the stepmother.

The wicked witch in Hansel and Gretel is fattening Hansel to throw him into the oven.  That is to say she is giving him additional knowledge his parents could not provide to transform him (oven) into a man.
What about the bones in the back of the witch’s house in Hansel and Gretel?  The bones belong to those who entered the witch’s house but could not make the transition from child to adult.
What if a child is walking through the forest, sees the hut of Baba Yaga but responds: “I don’t believe in that nonsense…” and walks away. The child grows into an adult.  Nothing will stop that, but they retain the mind of a child.  In our culture gang members fit this condition.

We cannot help but notice the artist drew the upper half of our transformational Baba Yaga as a triangle.  The triangle or letter “V” is the symbol of the female.  How can we use this information to transform the constellations of the summer triangle from opaque to transparent?

If our culture were influenced more by Greek mythology we would be able to understand the Greek use of the swan.  To us, the water bird called a swan is our opaque water bird, the stork is transparent. Note how mentioning the stork conjures up the cartoon of Dumbo.  Who brings the baby elephant to the mother elephant but a stork?  We say the word “stork” speaks to us the way “swan” spoke to the Greeks.  These birds represent life giving.

The eagle is a bird of prey.  In order to survive it must kill.  So in our celestial triangle we have the symbol of life giving and life taking.

How does the vulture fit in? The vulture, unlike the eagle, does not kill to survive but instead eats things already dead.  Death provides life for this bird.

From our celestial triangle we have the symbols of life giving (swan), life taking (eagle) death and regeneration (vulture). It describes the motions of the sun, moon, stars and planets in the sky.  These astronomical objects appear to rise in the east, pass overhead, and set in the west only to rise again (regeneration). It represents the same journey we are all on of birth, life and death.  This is how we can transform the constellations of the summer triangle from opaque to transparent.  They are about us.
